Netanyahu’s Red Line challenge issued last September is approaching. He anticipated that, without a change, it might be reached by mid-2013—and we just passed the summer solstice. Iran’s policies are unchanged by the recent election and anticipated softer line from Iran’s new president. We should be hard-nosed diplomatically while standing with Israel (as we have promised) and building our defenses against the growing possibility of a nuclear armed Iran. But the administration’s policies do not offer much promise for a change in dangerous realities that pose a serious threat to all we hold dear. Hopefully, representatives in other states will follow with similar initiatives—and Washington’s “powers that be” will implement recommendations of the 2004 and 2008 reports from the congressionally mandated EMP Commission with initiatives to end America’s vulnerability to the existential electromagnetic pulse (EMP) threat! The U.S. Navy’s Aegis Ballistic Missile Defense (BMD) system is getting well deserved credits for being the first line of missile defense, especially against ballistic missiles that Iran or North Korea might launch to attack the United States. We have provided a printed version to friends for whom we have no email address—hopefully they will also join our social media family to get our more frequent emails. This version, provided to those for whom we do have email addresses is preferable to the written version because it provides links to referenced reports and papers—to support additional study. The electromagnetic pulse (EMP) threat was understood during the Cold War, and the Commander of Strategic Command (STRATCOM) says it is still a matter of great concern—including to American society as a whole. But the Defense Department is not responsible for many components of our critical infrastructure—nor does any other department seem responsible for an integrated response to EMP, which poses an existential threat.
