July 29, 2014—Quick Fixes to Counter the Existential EMP Threat!

We remain vulnerable to the existential electromagnetic pulse (EMP) threat that is posed by rogue states and jihadi terrorists. Time’s awasting, but we have relatively inexpensive ways to counter this threat beginning immediately if only the “powers that be” wake up and take the needed actions. Click here (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ERKJKeMik0k) for Johnny Cash and June Carter and 2 minutes of “Times A Wastin.” Read Full Story

July 18, 2014—While the Storm Clouds Gather . . .

I recall many times my wife and the love of my life, Bobbye, telling me of her grandfather sitting on his front porch in Oklahoma, watching the storm clouds gather and eventually shepherding his family into the storm cellar before forming tornadoes arrived. This is not unlike how I feel today watching the international storm clouds gather. And it does not seem that we have anyone with a perspective analogous to Bobbye’s grandfather to guide us to safety in the current dangerous situation. Read Full Story

July 9, 2014—Bill Gaubatz R.I.P.

High Frontier is saddened to hear of the death of Bill Gaubatz, a tireless technical advocate, engineering innovator and team builder to advance our national space capabilities, whose expertise was most clearly demonstrated by worldwide television accounts on August 18, 1993 of the launch of the DC-X, or Clipper Graham as it was sometimes dubbed. This first rocket and its improvements subsequently landed and flew again, 12 times before failing, set the stage for a reusable launch capability still to be harnessed by the subsequent powers that be—though the current generation of space innovators—linked to that past—are nearing that day. May God give him eternal peace. Read Full Story

July 4, 2014—Richard Scaife R.I.P.

High Frontier is saddened to hear of the death of Richard Scaife on this day as we celebrate our Independence. We are especially indebted to him for his many years of support, from our earliest days when The Heritage Foundation provided a home for Retired Army Lt. General Daniel O. Graham to prepare his original High Frontier report advocating a prominent role for strategic defenses as an alternative to the Cold War’s doctrine of Mutual Assured Destruction. That High Frontier effort and Gen. Graham’s grass roots advocacy led to President Ronald Reagan’s Strategic Defense Initiative (SDI) which many believe was instrumental in bringing an end to the Cold War. Read Full Story

July 2, 2014—Aegis Can Help Counter the EMP Threat

As we join in the festivities of our Independence Day celebrations, we need to renew the pledges made by those who proposed the Declaration of Independence some 238 years ago today—again to “mutually pledge to each other our Lives, our Fortunes and our sacred Honor” to assure the birthright given to us by the Founders is passed to future Americans. Not least is to prepare for and counter the existential EMP threat posed by the current forces of tyranny. Read Full Story

June 30, 2014—Howard Baker R.I.P.

Howard Baker, with a lifetime of public service, accomplished many things for the American people. Among those many accomplishments, those of us missile defense advocates should be grateful for his role, as our Ambassador to Japan, in establishing the joint U.S.-Japanese Aegis ballistic missile defense program that has produced numerous BMD capable ships on patrol around the world. May he rest in peace. Read Full Story

June 19, 2014—Oh, What a Tangled Web We Weave!

June 19, 2014—Oh, What a Tangled Web We Weave!

The quote “Oh, what a tangled web we weave, when first we practice to deceive” refers to how complicated life becomes when people lie. It originally referred to a love triangle in the 1808 play “Marmion,” written by Sir Walter Scott. It applies in spades to previous and current policies of the Obama administration, especially those ineptly dealing with existential threats posed by the explosive conditions in the Middle East and East Asia. So, will we pay attention or find ourselves entangled and captured by the web? Read Full Story

June 12, 2014—Bin Laden is Dead and Al Qaeda is on the Run . . . Not!

In spite of claims to the contrary, al Qaeda and its allies and friends are alive and well—and seeking the destroy America and all our values and traditions. We have the knowledge and means to counter a growing existential threat posed by them, but we must recognize the threat and deal with it. Included in our response should be building effective defenses and hardening the electric power grid. Soon! Read Full Story

June 5, 2014—Perceptions vs. Reality . . .

The most cost-effective way to counter the threat of proliferating ballistic missiles with improved offensive countermeasures is with space-based defenses that can intercept attacking ballistic missiles while their rockets are burning in their boost phase, before they can release their decoys that can overwhelm our current mid-course defenses that work in outer space. These space-based defense concepts remain controversial—and are falsely perceived to be too expensive and beyond our reach. Over two decades ago, the most advanced technology produced by the Strategic Defense Initiative (SDI) was used to design a far more cost-effective system concept than any other basing alternative—before or since. We need to overcome this false perception and take full advantage of current technology to build a modern space-based defense system. And there are signs this is possible. Read Full Story
