January 13, 2014—Space: The Final Frontier?

After reviewing our previous messages on the EMP threat from space posed by North Korea and Iran (associated with instabilities in the Middle East), we update our concerns about Russia and especially China. The bad news: Chinese belligerence is growing and includes threats to our critically important space systems. The good news: Space Command is considering new architectures to be more survivable with capabilities that only can be provided by space-based defenses. Read Full Story

January 8, 2014—Appoint a Select Committee on Benghazi!

In a departure from my usual High Frontier agenda, I want to share that I joined with a number of others in urging House Speaker John Boehner to form a Select Committee, with sufficient authority to get to the bottom of what led to Benghazi debacle and the subsequent failure of various investigations in providing credible conclusions. We owe the truth to those who died or were wounded in serving our country, their families and all Americans. Read Full Story

January 6, 2014—Resolution for 2014: Provide for the Common Defense!

Resolve: We will proactively work with grass roots citizens and the local, state and federal “powers that be” to understand and respond effectively to the existential electromagnetic pulse (EMP) threat, particularly as delivered by ballistic missiles launched from vessels off our coasts, especially from the Gulf of Mexico; we will focus on empowering the National Guard to lead critically important efforts to achieve integrated measures for prevention and response. Open Letter on the Threat from the Gulf of Mexico

Open Letter on the Threat from the Gulf of Mexico

If you live near the Gulf of Mexico, you are the front line to an emerging existential threat to all Americans. The electromagnetic pulse (EMP) from a nuclear weapon exploded a hundred miles above the U.S. could kill 60-90 percent of all Americans. Though efforts in 2013 made progress in gaining awareness of this key problem, much remains to be done to get the powers that be to address this well-known threat that could be launched by Iran or Terrorists from a ship in the Gulf. December 18, 2013—Stormy Weather . . .

December 18, 2013—Stormy Weather . . .

Major solar storms will one day inject a massive cloud of electric particles into the earth’s geomagnetic field, producing a major electromagnetic pulse (EMP) that causes catastrophic permanent damage to the electric power grid, unless it is hardened. Our “just-in-time” economy would halt indefinitely, and without necessities dependent on electricity, several hundred million Americans would die within a year. Time to pay attention to such “stormy weather,” don’t you think? Read Full Story

December 11, 2013—Coming Soon: An EMP “Black Swan” Event?

December 11, 2013—Coming Soon: An EMP “Black Swan” Event?

The Japanese surprise attack on Pearl Harbor 72 years ago was a classic “Black Swan” event in that it was unexpected but should have been, as concluded after the fact. A fair question is whether we are courting another “surprise” attack that should be identified now and countered while there is still time to prevent or defend against it? Read Full Story

December 5, 2013—Where Are Today’s Maccabees?

December 5, 2013—Where Are Today’s Maccabees?

On this, the final day of Chanukah, as Jews worldwide complete their celebration of the Maccabee victory that liberated their Temple over two millennia ago, all Americans should remember our common love of liberty, the heritage that has set the West apart, and the common enemy that threatens our very existence and freedom today. We need modern Maccabees to preserve that heritage of liberty for our posterity. So may it be . . . Read Full Story

November 27, 2013—Thanks for the Memories . . .

November 27, 2013—Thanks for the Memories . . .

As we pause to give thanks for all our blessings, it is good to remember lessons learned from those who came before us, and to recommit ourselves to keeping this land free and prosperous for those who follow us. Memories give us a context for seeing and meeting our opportunities to leave this land better than we found it—with the help of the Sovereign of the Universe. So may it be . . . Read Full Story

November 22, 2013—Today’s Little Round Top . . .

November 22, 2013—Today’s Little Round Top . . .

As Americans this week recalled Abraham Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address 150 years ago and we remember the Maine 20th Regiment in the battle for Little Round Top, we see an interesting parallel. Maine citizens again have the potential to lead to the protection of all Americans from the existential threat posed by manmade or natural electromagnetic pulse (EMP). So may it be. Read Full Story

November 18, 2013—Grid Ex II: An Exercise in Wishful Thinking.

November 18, 2013—Grid Ex II: An Exercise in Wishful Thinking.

Like leaving a child with access to a supply of candy without a threat of disciplinary measures, the powers that be are permitting the nation’s electric power companies to ignore existential threats to the American people while conducting interesting but ineffective exercises that ignore this reality. More effective oversight is needed. Stay tuned . . . Read Full Story
