MI5: Heads-Up!
By Ambassador Henry F. Cooper
January 12, 2015
“We still face more complex and ambitious plots that follow the now sadly well established approach of Al Qaeda and its imitators: attempts to cause large scale loss of life, often by attacking transport systems or iconic targets. We know, for example, that a group of core Al Qaeda terrorists in Syria is planning mass casualty attacks against the West.“ ~ MI5 Director Andrew Parker
In the midst of the 24/7 reports on the January 7th Islamic terrorist cell attack in Paris and follow-on activities, the Director General of the Security Service, Andrew Parker, addressed the Royal United Services Institute (RUSI) at Thames House on January 8, 2015. The Military Intelligence, Section 5 (MI5), Great Britain’s acclaimed intelligence service, presented a sobering picture of the threat confronting the West. Click here for his unabridged comments.
If anything, Director Parker’s unusually frank assessment only hints at the potentially catastrophic possibilities that could be in our future—“intended to cause large scale loss of life,” created by an enemy our “politically correct” leaders do not even identify, at least by name.
At least some in the press are going so far as to refer to them as “Islamic Terrorists,” though most seek to avoid any direct link to the religious origin of the most heinous acts. For example, CNN was referring to “French Terrorists” as the culprits who executed the Paris attacks at least into last weekend—though al Qaeda claimed, with some justification, the attack was by a cell of their making.
Even Director Parker, whose clear warnings should be heeded, seemed to echo these “politically correct” folks in his reference to claims of the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS):
“I won’t dignify the group with its self-adopted propaganda label ‘Islamic State’. Scholars have rightly pointed out that it is neither ‘Islamic’, nor is it a state. Its true nature is visible to all from its visceral brutality – including the murder of hostages – and its indulgence of the very worst imaginable forms of treatment of other human beings. Its hatred is directed against all who do not adhere to its own twisted ideology. The vast majority of its victims are Muslims. It is rightly condemned by Muslim leaders and scholars.”
If these Muslims prefer to refer to themselves as Islamic, so be it. Why should I doubt they know what they believe to be Islamic? I prefer to call such folks jihadis to emphasize that these are Islamic “true believers,” implementing the dictates of sharia and seeking to follow the Prophet. This is what they claim. Why should we tell them what they really mean?
To be sure, many fear offending Muslims, the majority of whom are not involved in these acts of terror, though far too many of them applaud such acts when they occur. And even a small percentage of 1.5 billion Muslims in the world is a very large number.
Consider again the following global summary of where Muslims lived in 2010, from my July 30, 2013 discussion of the Orwellian Logic on Steroids that constitutes our “political correctness.” If only one-percent of the Muslims in the United States are among the true believers, who cheer the jihadis even if they are not actively involved in acts of terrorism—that amounted to 35,000 in 2010. How many more are here now, given our lax emigration policies and our leaky borders?
If the majority of Muslims do not support these jihadi acts of terror, then more should speak out against them!
A very important positive example of a leader speaking out on New Year’s Day was eclipsed by last week’s events in Paris. Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi addressed the clerics at the thousand-year old Al-Azhar University, considered by many to be the epicenter of scholarly Islam. See Jonah Goldberg’s USA Today article for an overview, with links to translated key excerpts of this important speech, perhaps the most important of which follows. President el Sisi stated:
“I am referring here to the religious clerics. … It’s inconceivable that the thinking that we hold most sacred should cause the entire umma (Islamic world) to be a source of anxiety, danger, killing and destruction for the rest of the world. Impossible!
“That thinking — I am not saying ‘religion’ but ‘thinking’ — that corpus of texts and ideas that we have sacralized over the centuries, to the point that departing from them has become almost impossible, is antagonizing the entire world. It’s antagonizing the entire world! … All this that I am telling you, you cannot feel it if you remain trapped within this mindset. You need to step outside of yourselves to be able to observe it and reflect on it from a more enlightened perspective.
“I say and repeat again that we are in need of a religious revolution. You, imams, are responsible before Allah. The entire world, I say it again, the entire world is waiting for your next move … because this umma is being torn, it is being destroyed, it is being lost — and it is being lost by our own hands.”
El-Sisi then on January 6 attended a Coptic Christian Christmas Mass, the first time anything like that has been done by an Egyptian president. He spoke of his love of Christian Egyptians and the need to see “all Egyptians” as part of “one hand”
These initiatives are examples of what Westerners have long wanted to see. Yet, they have been almost entirely ignored by the mainstream news media.
We should all pay attention to see if President el-Sisi actually follows through on these fine initiatives—or whether they are just an extension of the strategy he described in his 2006 thesis at the U.S. Army War College in Carlisle, PA—and summarized in my August 23, 2013 High Frontier message.
Perhaps most troubling was his Thesis comment that: “[T]o codify the major themes of the Islamic faith, they should be represented in the constitution or similar document. This does not mean a theocracy will be established, rather it means a democracy will be established built upon Islamic beliefs.”
But sharia law, which is the basis for “Islamic beliefs,” is in direct conflict with the U.S. Constitution.
This concern should not be lost in the media euphoria surrounding the most welcome Paris mass demonstrations against last week’s terrorist acts. Serious conflicts between Eastern and Western values are consequences of their distinctive and historic religious underpinning. We need to develop a clear understanding of this jihadi threat to all we hold dear and develop the policies to prevail against the evil consequences of its significant presence within Europe and the United States. Al Qaeda is alive and well—and so is ISIS. The threat is larger than lone wolves and small clans. And we are in the crosshairs, as the MI5 Director stated.
So stay tuned on this front, while we also watch the unfolding dangers from jihadi developments around the world and possibly soon again in America, as suggested by MI5 Director Parker.
Such dangers may be manifest in individual terrorist events—or, unless we prepare better than we have so far, they may soon involve existential threats such as those identified in our last message—as High Frontier’s top priority concerns for 2015.
In particular, a quick review of our past email messages, posted on www.highfrontier.org, will inform you of many details related to the manmade and natural EMP threats and how we can protect America against them. Yes, we also remain vulnerable to the EMP caused by a major solar storm that will one day surely create this threat condition—and we are not dealing with it.
Help us make 2015 a successful year to remember! And may God bless America!
