On Wednesday, Ambassador Cooper joined others at the National Press Club to announce the formation of what we are referring to as “The EMP Coalition.” The brainchild of Frank Gaffney, President of the Center for Security Policy, is to be led by Honorary Co-Chairmen Former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich and Former CIA Director R. James Woolsey-and as of July 24^th, consists of the following individuals and organizations:

Our agenda at the National Press Club consisted of the individuals in the photo below, who briefly discussed the natural and man-made aspects of the existential EMP Threat and what might be done about it, with a special emphasis on the Shield Act, introduced in the House a couple of weeks back, as we previously reported. The agenda was:

Peter Pry discussed implications of the North Korean vessel intercepted in the Panama Canal last week, EMP threats outlined by the EMP Commission including, super-EMP design and collaboration with Iran.
Hank Cooper discussed the lack of southern-facing warning and missile defense capabilities and the need for corrective action
Clare Lopez discussed the emerging Iranian EMP threat
Michael Del Rosso discussed the danger or geomagnetic storms and the folly of leaving the electric power grid exposed to all hazards
Peter Huessy discussed the SHIELD Act and the bipartisan support for dealing with the EMP threat.
Steve Spiker discussed the findings of a recent Survey of public awareness of the EMP threat and potential support for the Shield Act in particular
Frank Gaffney led a brief Q&A period

The primary objective of the EMP Coalition is to help raise public consciousness of the threat to the nation’s electric power grid and thereby to the survival of several hundred million Americans in the event of either a high altitude nuclear attack or a massive solar emission—and the merits of the Shield Act being considered by the House of Representatives. This effort is being championed, in particular, by the EMP Caucus, led by Reps. Trent Franks (R-AZ) and Yvette Clark (D-NY). Currently, there are 19 members:

The bottom line finding from The Polling Company’s nationwide survey of 1000 adults was that there was strong broad based support for the Shield Act across the U.S.—among Republicans and Democrats, young and old, men and women. Men generally were more supportive; women were less aware of the threat. The young were more in favor of the Shield Act, while seniors were closer to being split.

From our perspective, the most important finding (see below) from this poll, taken between July 11th and 14^th, was that after getting more information about the rationale for action to deal with the threat, support for protecting the electric power grid jumped to seven out of ten Americans-clearly strong support for the Shield Act.

This is very encouraging to us at High Frontier, and leads us to want to redouble our efforts to inform everyone about the threat and what can be done about it.

Then, we may move more rapidly from a “V for Victory” to an “End of the Beginning” phase on Winston Churchill’s timeline scale for dealing with the existential threat of his day, as we discussed last Tuesday!

What to do?

High Frontier will increase its efforts to inform all who will listen, including local, state and Washington powers that be, of the existential threat associated with electromagnetic pulse (EMP), whether from the “Sun” or from nuclear weapons carried by ballistic missile or satellite—and how it can be countered. With all the bad news from the Middle East, East Asia and North Korea—coupled to the previously discussed reminder that they are both aligned in a “cacophony of proliferation” with powers to our south, we may need the most effective defenses we can build relatively soon.

And what can you do?

Join us at High Frontier in seeking to alert the public and your local and state authorities to the existential threats posed by both man-made and natural EMP events—and what can be done about these threats.

We can use your help in spreading this information to the grass roots and to encourage all “powers that be” to provide for the common defense as they are sworn to do. Will you do your part?
