“It’s déjà vu all over again,“ New York Yankee Yogi Berra supposedly explained after watching Mickey Mantle and Roger Maris repeatedly hit back-to-back home runs. As the dots are being connected following the Tax Day Boston Marathon Terrorist event, there are similar feelings—without any pleasure, except to those who wish to kill us in a Global Jihad.
Our last several Weekly Updates (on Mondays) and Flash Messages (on Wednesdays and Fridays) have reflected on implications of the terrorist attack at the finish line of the Boston Marathon—we now know that subsequent events have contradicted early mainstream media claims that this event was perpetrated by the “self-radicalized” Tsarnaev brothers, acting pretty much alone.
Many others now support Rep. Michael T. McCaul’s (R-TX) assessment on Fox News Sunday (April 28) that the “level of sophistication” (including the use of remote control triggering devices) indicated the two improvised bombs made from pressure cookers that killed three and injured more than 260 indicates that the Tsarnaevs had help from at least “a trainer.” The good Chairman of the House Homeland Security Committee was justified in his concern about a “wider conspiracy.”
The Intelligence Community (IC) and others are trying to understand why there was no recognized warning of this terrorist event, by sorting out the tangled web of at least:
- Overseas Tsarnaev connections with family, friends and Jihadi activists in Chechnya;
- Why Russia’s warning about the older brother’s terrorist connections was ignored; and
- U.S. connections with individuals and organizations that advocate Jihad, including with the Boston area Mosques and their well-known connections to the Muslim Brotherhood, which in turn is linked to al Qaeda, Hamas and other Islamic terrorist organizations.
As has generally been the case in past attacks that caught us by surprise, it is becoming clear that warning signs were missed or ignored—at least in part because of bureaucratic barriers within the IC to safeguard information for prosecuting criminals rather than to support countering, preferably preventing, terrorist threats such as what we saw in Boston on Tax Day,
These distinctions continued even after that event, witness when the younger Tsarnaev was read his Miranda rights ending, or at least restraining, revelations useful to the IC on how the Terrorist event was planned, who was involved (in the U.S. and abroad) and what might come next, particularly in the U.S. as the Jihadists press their agenda.
We were supposed to have learned these lessons, elaborated by the July 2004 report from the 9/11 Commission—but it appears that we, at least in part, have reverted to the attitude that guided the IC prior to the 2005 major IC reorganization and a Director of National Intelligence, whose successor now tells us that everything worked just fine. Seems we’ve heard this story before.
Meanwhile, the agents of political correctness continue to shield the reality of a Global Jihad and to demand tolerance for Islam as a religion—which is alleged to be protected by the Constitution. This ignores the fact that Islam is based on an ideological legal system called Sharia, which directs all of life and demands that all submit to its tenets—it definitely is not a “religion of peace” as declared by President George W. Bush immediately after 9/11.
This, too, is a lesson taught by centuries of history . . . indeed, “It’s déjà vu all over again“ as we watch the shadow of a Global Jihad unfolding over Europe and other places—and I fear in America as well.
And while watching the unfolding crisis in Syria, recall its “Arab Spring” precedent in Egypt, now firmly under the grip of the Muslim Brotherhood. Will Syria be another “It’s déjà vu all over again?“
Will we see more events like the Boston Marathon? Some believe that it was the first of a metastasizing threat of so-called “self-radicalized” Islamist acts—perhaps more appropriately considered as the next phase of bringing the Global Jihad to America.
Maybe. And that would be a very serious problem—a possibility that suggests it is prudent to review how to best respond to that threat.
But I would not forget the existential threat that could be posed by Iran—which I understand is one of two states controlled by a legal system totally committed to constraining life under Sharia. (The other is Saudi Arabia.) This is why I agree with Israel’s International Relations Minister Yuval Steinitz, who last Sunday warned that Iran having a nuclear weapon would be equal to “thirty nuclear North Koreas.”
This will be particularly true for America when Iran gets a sufficiently light nuclear weapon that can be mated to their already demonstrated satellite launch capability. If launched to North Korea’s south and approached the U.S. from over the South Pole, that satellite/weapon could be detonated over the U.S. to create a continent wide electromagnetic pulse (EMP), that ultimately could kill several hundred million Americans within a year. They have many ballistic missiles that can reach Israel with such a nuclear weapon.
An EMP attack has never happened before—and I hope won’t happen now. But we need to be sure it doesn’t happen—or if it does, that we are prepared to defend against it and can reconstitute our electric power grid and other critical infrastructure if our defenses fail. We sure don’t want this to set the stage for a future “déjà vu all over again” event.
